Don't stop at television. TV creates interest in a product but a broader multimedia approach ensures maximum profits. Bolster infomercials with traditional commercials, home shopping appeals, print ads in key publications, catalogs, direct mail, Internet sales, and other efforts. Consider new products in light of their full multimedia potential and always be on the look out for new media to tap into.
A leader leads, so be on the frontlines especially in the heat of battle. In 1990, Congress and the Federal Trade Commission were about to impose a legislative straightjacket on the infomercial industry in response to incidents of fraud and abuse. Asked to testify before a Congressional subcommittee, Guthy-Renker took the initiative to form a trade group that would voluntarily police the industry. Today that group, known as the Electronic Retailing Association, serves as the ethical compass for the direct response television industry and Greg Renker remains its Chairman Emeritus. Because Guthy-Renker was unafraid to lead, we garnered greater respect and prestige among our colleagues, government, and the world.
Get your name out there, but cultivate the right image from the get-go because once the public has a perception about you it is nearly impossible to change it. Inspire consumer recognition and trust by associating the name of your company with each product and program, in effect selling your company as aggressively as your products. Be willing to be visible, even if it means taking a hit for your industry. The result will be that competitors and customers will think you are bigger, better, and more powerful than you might actually be.
Don't bet the farm on fads. Look for products that sell indefinitely to the largest and most reliable audience possible. Do your homework and go the extra mile to find products with the greatest multimedia potential. Be on the lookout for new capital sources but remember that not every opportunity is your opportunity, so don't be afraid to pass.
Adapt, adapt, adapt. The direct marketing industry changes on a daily basis. The only eternal rule is to keep your ear to the ground and your antennae up at all times. Stay ahead of and capitalize on changing trends. As your company evolves, so must your corporate strategy. Don't fall in love with a business plan because it will only break your heart.

Raised by his mother above a New York City luncheonette, Guthy experienced a childhood of meager means. He excelled in high school-as editor of the paper, president of the Speech Club and student body vice president-conducting a successful landscaping business on the side. "I always had an entrepreneurial drive, a desire to do better," Guthy recalls.
In 1969, the family settled in Southern California where Guthy followed tradition and attended Ambassador College in the only major then offered, Theology. In his sophomore year, the school broadened its choices and he switched to Psychology, graduating with a B.S. in 1977.
While in college, Guthy served as senior class president and paid his tuition by duplicating audiotapes for the Blind Department of the church affiliated with Ambassador. He eventually secured permission to rent the equipment at night and took on independent jobs. Cassette Productions Unlimited (CPU), his own audiotape duplication and packaging firm, was thus born in 1977. Originally operating from his apartment, Guthy soon bought his own equipment and moved into a small office in Pasadena.
In 1981, Guthy purchased a home for weekend retreats in Indian Wells, California and began a friendship with Greg Renker, whose family owned the resort. Both men realized they shared a love of motivational books, in particular Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich." Guthy himself was well on his way to financial success, his cassette duplication business flourishing. CPU, now owned by Guthy-Renker, has since grown to become one of the largest producers of audio and video cassettes with over 200,000 square feet of manufacturing space on both coasts and over 150 employees.
An explosion of growth occurred in 1984 when real estate mogul Paul Simon gave Guthy's company an unusually large order-to duplicate 120,000 audio cassettes. The purpose sparked Guthy's interest. Simon was running an infomercial on cable stations advertising cassettes of his real estate course. Guthy soon realized, "If I could start my own infomercial company, I could be my own best customer."
In 1986, having stayed in touch with Renker by swapping ideas, Guthy recognized the time was ripe to enter the burgeoning infomercial business. It took little time to identify their first product, "Think and Grow Rich." Acquiring the rights to the book and the author's lectures for an audiotape series, they hired football star Fran Tarkenton as their first pitch man. "Think and Grow Rich" grossed nearly $10 million, leading Guthy and Renker to their next project with motivational speaker and best-selling author, Tony Robbins.
During the production of Robbins' Personal Power, Guthy-Renker was spun off from CPU and officially formed on November 1, 1988. Following such early successes as Personal Power¨ and Principal Secret¨, a skin care program with partner Victoria Principal, Guthy-Renker produced such programs as the "Power Trainer¨ Exercise Machine" starring Bruce and Kris Jenner; Perfect Smile¨, a teeth whitening system with Vanna White; Proactiv¨ Solution acne treatment with Judith Light; and the Power Rider¨ exerciser with Fran Tarkenton.

A principal of Guthy-Renker, Kevin Knee is Co-President of Guthy-Renker LLC. Kevin is a shareholder in the company and serves on its Board of Directors, a board that includes founders Bill Guthy and Greg Renker, Ben Van De Bunt, and Lenny Lieberman. Kevin joined the company in 1994 and is responsible for all domestic and international operations. In his capacity as COO, he oversees finance, inventory management, media, information systems, and the company's Internet business interests.
Prior to joining Guthy-Renker, Kevin was Chief Operating and Financial Officer for Walt Disney Direct Marketing, Disney's consumer products direct marketing business. As part of Senior Management, he oversaw the operations for five separate children's product catalogs and associated retail businesses. He began his career at Hanover Direct, Inc., as Senior Financial Analyst and quickly advanced to Auditing Manager and then company Controller. Kevin graduated from St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania with a bachelor degree in accounting and finance.
A principal of Guthy-Renker, Ben Van De Bunt is Co-President of Guthy-Renker LLC, responsible for business affairs and new business development. Ben is a shareholder in the company and serves on its Board of Directors, a board that includes founders Bill Guthy and Greg Renker, Kevin Knee, and Lenny Lieberman. Since joining Guthy-Renker in 1993, Ben has been responsible for business development, business affairs, legal and administrative matters for the Company.
Prior to joining Guthy-Renker, Ben was an attorney at Allen, Matkins. A graduate of Harvard Law School and a member of the California Bar Association, Ben also holds a degree in history from UCLA where he graduated with honors. Ben was also on the Board of Directors of the Electronic Retailing Association (ERA).
For 20 years, Lenny Lieberman has been CEO of Lieberman Productions, a San Francisco-based television marketing firm responsible for infomercial and spot creation for many of Guthy-Renker's brands, both domestically and internationally. Lenny has worked in partnership with co-founder Greg Renker since Guthy-Renker's first projects in the late 1980s, and now oversees an in-house staff of writers, editors and direct response experts to produce a continuous supply of new programming to support Guthy-Renker's brands. In 2008, Lieberman Productions became a wholly owned subsidiary of Guthy-Renker. Lenny is a shareholder in the Company and serves on the Board of Directors. He is a graduate of Stanford University, and a documentary filmmaker by trade.
